20110417-115619.jpgIf you commute frequently, you’ll know that everyone finds their ways to pass time on a journey, whether long or short most people like to to find something to fill time with. I remember in the not too distant past being able to look around and see people playing card games, top trumps, reading books and just simply taking a nap to pass time, with maybe just the odd business person on a laptop.

Fast forward to now… where mobile communication and devices have become part and parcel of daily life, and chances are whilst you may still find the occasional book and person taking a nap you are more than guaranteed to find someone either on a laptop, smartphone or some form of electronic entertainment device, and not just restricted to business use anymore but for every need and walk of life.

The reality is that a majority of today’s younger generations have been so accustomed to having access to their Facebook / twitter / social network profile on the move, that the moment it’s taken away symptoms are typical of drug withdrawal, crazy as it may sound recent research I have seen have proven it to be true.

However, it’s not just social networking that adds to the need for constant access to the world wide web, it seems nowadays that the best place for up to date breaking news aggregation is actually the internet, and as such it’s not just youth that are being drawn into the “ever connected” life. Anyone who likes to be in touch with what’s going on gets drawn to being “wired” into the ever flowing source of information and the multitude of media that comes with it.

I have to admit, I am probably one of these people, I spend a majority of my commutes reading news, tweets and just generally being “wired” up. What if my signal goes? Well I just pop on a film on my iPad / iPhone and bide time with that.

But what amazes me most is how little I have actually utilised a laptop computer ever since I got a comprehensive smartphone and also more recently an iPad 2, the combination of both those devices have given me little need to actually fire up my laptop… Looking back I actually never liked doing heavy work on my laptop, I was always more comfortable doing heavy levels of work on a desktop and maybe just doing minor tweaks on a laptop…

But the reality is I actually do everything I once did on my laptop on my iPad / iPhone… There’s suffice code editing and SFTP / FTP apps on iOS devices that can handle quick edits on the move, and browsing the internet?… Well even that can be done well enough on my mobile devices… Jailbreak either, and well even more opportunities open to what you can actually do.

It does make me realise how much I am constantly “connected” though and how reliant I am on my “mobile life”, but it’s just crazy to think it was only a matter of years ago that this wasn’t the case… Now it’s just the wait for teleporters, hover cars and hover boards I guess lol.

How bout you, how would you fare if someone took away your mobile device(s)?
